The SWOT Analysis: A Biblical Perspective – Part 1

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

Reviewing a business’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats is an important aspect of managing a business. This will guide you to reconsider what to continue, stop, start or change in your business. That is the first step in analyzing what should be done (or not done).

Perhaps you have determined an opportunity for your business based on your SWOT Analysis. It could be a new project, a new product or a new program.

The Business SWOT Analysis is the first step, the Biblical SWOT Analysis is your next step.

Search:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: test me and know my anxious thoughts.” Psalm 139:23

You are likely excited about a new initiative. Ask God to search your heart so you can have confidence you have the right motives. Perhaps it is a good thing for your business but not the best thing. Perhaps it is a good thing but you have the wrong motives. Search deeply for your real motives.

Wait:

“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patient for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14

Along with the excitement of a new opportunity there can also be impatience. New opportunities take resources such as time, energy and financial cost that need to be considered. Exercise patience as you make a timely decision.

Offensive:

“Point out anything in me that offends You, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Psalm 139:24

Consider if there is anything that may be offensive to God in considering this new opportunity. For instance, perhaps it is a wonderful project but it is going to lead you away from something God still wants you to do. If so, there may be some different options such as delegating.

Talk:

“Because He bends down to listen I will pray as long as I have breath.” Psalm 116:2

Pray about the opportunity and ask God if this is something your business should pursue. Read His Word to see if there is anything about this opportunity that is starting to look concerning. God can also teach you through wise counselors so speak with them and pray with them about it. He is listening.
